“Psychic Scar” by Tiny Tomboy: Review

Tiny Tomboy are back with a raw, unfiltered punch to the gut. Their new LP, “Psychic Scar”, released on February 1st, is a chaotic yet cathartic dive into romantic frustration, self-loathing, and the desperate search for connection.

Right from the start, the album doesn’t just open—it erupts. A swirl of feedback crashes into fuzzy, overdriven guitars and thunderous drums, setting the tone for what’s to come. The opening track wastes no time with pleasantries, delivering the biting first lines: "You look like you call your mom every day. She tells you you’re strong."

At first, it plays like a tongue-in-cheek jab at the momma’s boys of the world, but as the song unfolds, the playful teasing twists inward, spiraling into a self-destructive anthem of doubt and longing. This emotional whiplash is the essence of “Psychic Scar”—an album that starts at the edge of a feeling and, track by track, pulls you deeper into its tangled mess of vulnerability, anger, and fleeting euphoria.

The magic of Tiny Tomboy lies in their electric chemistry. Vocalist/guitarist Eliza Neiman-Golden, drummer Sam Seymour, and bassist Ethan Gould recorded the album live, together in a room, capturing a raw energy that can’t be faked. Their voices weave in and out of each other, sometimes harmonizing, sometimes colliding, while their instruments lock together with a reckless precision. A sound that feels as urgent as the emotion it captures.

Musically, “Psychic Scar” is as much a throwback to ‘90s alt-rock’s golden era as it is a modern, unpolished punch of punk attitude. Think the emotional weight of Elliott Smith, the fuzz-drenched riffs of Dinosaur Jr., and the heart-on-sleeve angst of Soccer Mommy or Bully. But Tiny Tomboy makes it their own—never settling into nostalgia, always pushing forward with urgency and conviction.

This album is all about duality. It’s full of songs that make you want to dance and cry at the same time—blistering, distorted anthems that crash headfirst into quiet, devastating moments of reflection. One minute, you’re shouting along to Eliza’s biting lyrics, the next, you’re lying on your bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling every word hit like a gut-punch.

“Psychic Scar” isn’t just an album—it’s an emotional experience. A rollercoaster of rage, regret, and fleeting hope that refuses to smooth out its rough edges. Get ready to feel everything, all at once.
