“Lorna's Room (The Loss of Love) - Sketch 2” - Giulio Risi

An empty room, once alive with conversation and laughter, now filled only with quiet. There’s a chair pushed just slightly back. Dust on the windowsill. A piano in the corner, not so much played as felt. This is the world Giulio Risi invites us into with “Lorna’s Room (The Loss of Love)”, the second single from his upcoming concept album Seven Sketches of Loss—and honestly, it’s like someone pressed play on your memories.
This track is delicate, devastating, and deeply human. No lyrics, no sweeping orchestra—just a solo piano unraveling the threads of a relationship that’s no longer there. And yet somehow, it says everything.
“Lorna’s Room” starts quietly—almost tentatively. You can practically hear the pianist hesitating, like stepping into a space too full of ghosts. Then, the melody finds its footing, and with it comes an ache that builds note by note.
It’s very much in the vein of Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds, or even early Ryuichi Sakamoto—but there’s something uniquely Risi about this composition. It doesn’t aim to impress—it aims to express. And in doing so, it becomes incredibly intimate.
Think: a candle burning out. A final letter never sent. That specific kind of silence that only shows up after love has walked away.
This isn’t just a standalone piece—it’s the second sketch in a seven-part concept album that Giulio calls Seven Sketches of Loss. Each track explores a different face of loss—from grief to identity to the slow unraveling of love. “Lorna’s Room” is the romantic chapter, but it’s not the big dramatic breakup song. It’s the after. The emptiness. The nostalgia. The reluctant acceptance.

Risi doesn’t give us answers—he gives us space. Space to grieve, to reflect, to revisit our own “Lorna’s Room,” whatever or whoever that may be.
Giulio Risi isn’t some upstart on their first EP. He’s a multi-award-winning composer and pianist whose career has spanned jazz, gospel, pop, and progressive rock (shoutout to his days with Jadis, produced by Marillion). And yet, this is his first original release in 15 years.
Fifteen years. That’s not just a comeback—that’s a rebirth.
In Risi’s own words, this album marks a return not just to music, but to himself. And wow, you can hear it. There’s nothing performative here. Every note feels earned. Every rest between phrases feels like it’s holding something unsaid.
“Lorna’s Room,” is a deeply moving and introspective triumph. It shines a bright light on Risi as a true innovator.
Sit back and allow yourself a journey into deep melancholic nostalgia.
Love has left the room, but its music still lingers.
