The Cassy Judy Mixtape is not just a collection of songs—it’s a vivid, fearless portrait of a life lived at full emotional volume. Sydney artist Cassy Judy returns with her most personal, playful, and politically charged project yet, blending vulnerability and protest, joy and defiance, sax solos and sharp-edged storytelling. This EP is a love letter to queer resilience, to the communities that shape us, and to the parts of ourselves we grow into only through fire.

Produced by long-time collaborator Derek J Turner, with key songwriting contributions from Sam Schroder, this project arrives as an artistic milestone: it marks Cassy’s studio saxophone debut, a moment of musical self-claiming that is both celebratory and symbolically significant. The recording sessions at Quarterpipe Studios in Gymea Bay carry a sense of homecoming—full of familiar warmth, in-jokes, and Derek’s dog Muffin wandering in for cuddles. The spirit of community is baked into the work long before a single note is played.

What makes this mixtape stand out is how wide its emotional range is. These songs are not trying to fit into a single mood or narrative—they’re her. They reflect real life, messy life, life that doesn’t perform neat arcs. Tracks like "Learn to Love Again" are tender, raw, and patient—a breathing space after heartbreak. Meanwhile, "Love Letter to Society" burns with the fury of someone who has seen injustice up close and refuses to look away. Cassy’s years working as a criminal lawyer in Broken Hill for the Aboriginal Legal Service haunt these songs—not as stories of pity, but as evidence of systems that harm and communities that resist. The EP is a refusal to pretend everything is fine.

Then, just when the emotional pressure threatens to peak, Cassy flips the switch. "Xanthan Gum" and "I’ve Come So Far Calypso" burst open with brightness, camp energy, party-in-the-living-room chaos—songs that feel like dancing glitter off your eyelashes at 1:00am. And then there’s "Fly Away," offering a gentle science-fiction vision of hope and future freedom—hyperloops and all.

This is an artist who contains multitudes. Unafraid to be fiery, soft, joyful, angry, exhausted, tender, and loud—all in the same breath. A performer who doesn’t simply tell her story but invites you into it.

What makes The Cassy Judy Mixtape so compelling is its sincerity. There is no posture here. No desire to appear polished or palatable. It is music that is lived in, lived with, and lived through. It is the sound of someone putting their stamp on things—exactly as her mother advised—and letting the world adjust accordingly.

It’s not just an EP. It’s a declaration: Here I am. I have come so far. And I am still moving.
