With their debut single “No Exit Wound”, True North don’t just drop a track, they offer a soulful revelation wrapped in a grooving, rock-infused soundscape. If you're into music that feels like it’s telling your story back to you—with depth, vulnerability, and some seriously slick production—this is one to press play on.
Emerging from the creative depths of Tones Thorburn (formerly of Stormporter and Late Model European), True North introduces itself not with a bang, but with a slow-burning fire that smolders its way into your heart and doesn’t let go.
“No Exit Wound” feels like standing at the edge of a memory and deciding whether to dive in or walk away. It’s got that smoky, soulful sting, but layered with the rich textures of rock instrumentation and hypnotic rhythm. Think early Kings of Leon meets Alabama Shakes, with a touch of Fleetwood Mac-style vocal interplay. There’s a pulsing heart beneath the melody—every beat feels intentional, every lyric soaked in truth.
The dual/mixed-gender vocals (Tones + the incredible Sandy Mill) bring an emotional push-and-pull that elevates the whole experience. It’s not just a song—it’s a conversation, a confession, maybe even a prayer.
Ben King (of Goldenhorse/Grand Rapids) who produces this track like a seasoned sculptor—every tone is polished, but nothing feels overproduced. The musicianship is next-level, pulling together some of New Zealand’s finest: Tones – laying down heartfelt vocals and textured guitars. Matthias Jordan (Pluto) – painting emotion with every piano and organ touch. Milan Borich (Pluto) – subtle but dynamic drumming that gives the song its heartbeat. Sandy Mill’s vocal presence adds soul and grace in all the right places. Ben King steps in with bass and backing harmonies that tie it all together.
Edith and Clementine Bainbridge-King add a sprinkle of rhythm magic on percussion. It's got family affair energy and we love to see it.

“No Exit Wound” is as poetic as it is powerful. It speaks of pain that doesn’t scream but lingers, of hope that doesn’t shout but hums beneath the surface. The lyrics move between resilience and reflection, touching on themes of faith, transformation and emotional scars.
The chorus is haunting, but not hopeless. There’s an elegance to the way the song confronts heavy emotions without wallowing in them. It’s that emotional sweet spot where you feel seen but also lifted.
The self-directed music video? Pure indie magic. Visually striking with a clear concept of duality—light vs. darkness, faith vs. fear, the video is moody, artistic, and absolutely aligns with the vibe of the track. It’s more than just a backdrop for the song—it expands on its emotional terrain and invites you deeper into the world of True North.
With an EP or full-length album on the horizon, “No Exit Wound” sets a strong tone for what’s to come. It’s clear that True North isn’t just another side project—this is a statement of purpose. You can hear the blood, sweat, and soul that went into every note.
“The end result is a song that I hope will connect and resonate with the soul," explains Tones. "The heartfelt pull of this song invites the listener to embark on a transformative journey.”
True North have arrived, not with loud fireworks, but with a quiet emotional explosion. This is music for the thinkers, the feelers, the ones who carry wounds that aren’t always visible but still run deep.
So if you're looking for a new artist to get emotionally attached to—True North just might be your compass.
