“Leevendig” - Foutloos

Fresh out the Belgian dunes and straight into your bloodstream comes Leevendig, the debut single from Foutloos—a trio that proves instrumental music doesn’t have to be background noise. It can move, sting, vibe, and seduce—all without saying a word.
The name "Foutloos" translates loosely to flawless, and while the trio might chuckle at such perfectionist implications, there's definitely a tight looseness in their sound—a fluidity that’s refined but never rigid. This isn't music trying to impress you with technical wizardry (though, yes, it's technically excellent). It's music that breathes, sways, and—true to its title—lives.
What makes Leevendig stand out is how deeply it's rooted in place. This isn’t some sterile studio jam—it was born in the dunes of Ostend, where salty air, wind-whipped solitude, and the ever-moving sea clearly seeped into the band’s bones.
You can hear it in the viola. Esther Coorevits doesn't just play—she paints with it. Her bow work rises and crashes like surf, sometimes mournful, sometimes mischievous, always emotive. Meanwhile, Renaud Debruyne’s drums lock into head-nodding, hip-hop-infused grooves that sit somewhere between Dilla and a hazy afternoon jazz set, and Jonas Bruyneel’s bass brings that silky funk that warms your chest and makes your spine sway.
Leevendig (which translates to Lively) is the kind of track that’s both melancholic and playful. It’s got the poise of a smoky jazz club, the swing of classic soul, and the experimental spirit of a late-night jam session. The contrast is what makes it electric.

The viola doesn’t just lead—it dances, sometimes weaving around the bassline, sometimes soaring above it like a gull over the shoreline. There are moments where it gets almost cutting, emotionally sharp, before softening into warm, nostalgic swells. You get the feeling these aren’t just riffs—they’re conversations, fragments of emotion passed between musicians who truly listen to each other.
Production is split between North Garden Studios and Studio Wellington, with Jonas Bruyneel pulling double duty as musician and producer. The mix—handled by Mirek Coutigny at Atlas Studios—gives every layer its space without over-polishing. It feels intimate and alive, like you're in the room with them. The mastering by Laurens Grossen (MotorMusic) ensures the track hums with warmth but still punches through.
What Foutloos brings with Leevendig isn’t just a song—it’s a statement of intent. This is a band that’s not afraid to blur genres, to let the sea in, to improvise their way into something raw and real. It’s the kind of debut that doesn’t scream “look at me” but whispers “we’re just getting started”—and you believe it.
There’s a quiet confidence here. It’s in the restrained pacing, in the choice to leave out vocals entirely, in the way they build tension without ever needing to explode. This is grown-up, groove-based, emotionally intelligent music—and it sticks with you.
Leevendig is cinematic neo-soul at its most organic—a dusky sunset over the sea turned into sound. It’s for the thinkers, the slow-dancers, the headphone listeners.
So close your eyes, let the groove carry you, and dive into Leevendig. It’s alive, and it knows how to make you feel the same.
