“Potholes” - Moss Henry

If you’ve ever been on the road long enough to feel both free and completely wrecked at the same time, Moss Henry’s new single “Potholes” is going to hit you right in the chest. This is a road song, sure—but it’s also a love song, a homesick prayer, and a wry bit of storytelling wrapped up in under four minutes.

Right out of the gate, Henry drops one of those lines that makes you laugh and wince at the same time: “Southbound on a backroad in nowhere Georgia, I hit a pothole so deep I went to Florida.” It’s funny, but it’s also the perfect metaphor for what the whole track is about—the ways life jars you, pulls you off course, and still somehow keeps you heading toward the person or place you need to get back to.

The recording itself feels lived-in and warm. Cut in the Virgin Islands with producer Allen Clapp and co-producer Taylor Lissadrello, it’s got a laid-back island undercurrent woven into the grit of Americana. You hear it in the guitars, the easy sway of the rhythm section, and especially the harmonies—local USVI players adding something that feels breezy but grounded. It’s a neat trick: Southern roots with salt air in its lungs.

But what really makes “Potholes” stick is Henry’s delivery. His voice has that world-weary tenderness that reminds me of Zach Bryan’s raw honesty or Brent Cobb’s easy drawl—direct, unpolished, but completely sincere. He’s not trying to impress you with fireworks; he’s telling you the truth. And when he hits that chorus—“When I make it home tonight, everything’s gonna be alright”—it’s not just a hook, it’s a mantra. You believe him, because you’ve probably whispered the same words to yourself at some point.

It’s also worth saying: Moss Henry has a knack for writing songs that feel personal but also instantly universal. “Potholes” isn’t just about a bad stretch of road—it’s about every detour and delay life throws at you, and the way you keep driving toward what matters most.

Fans of Hiss Golden Messenger, Jason Isbell, or anyone who likes their Americana with equal parts dust and heart are going to find a lot to love here. It’s a song that makes you want to roll the windows down, even if you’re just parked in your driveway.
