Atlanta-based artist Matt Rousseau, better known as MatAre, is making waves with his unique mix of dream-pop, indie rock, post-punk, and new wave vibes. His music hits that sweet spot where raw emotion meets shimmering melodies, creating tracks that stay with you long after the last note fades. MatAre’s latest single, “Under A Stone,” is introspective storytelling at its very best.
Recorded in his cozy home studio in Fort Walton Beach, FL, “Under A Stone” showcases the magic of collaboration. MatAre brought in his go-to drummer, Glenn Welman (all the way from South Africa), to nail down the tight, punchy rhythms. The track got its final polish from Gabe Wolf, the mix-master behind big names like Kurt Vile and Middle Kids.
If you enjoy bands like The Smiths, The Cure, or The Sundays, “Under A Stone” will feel like a throwback you didn’t know you needed. MatAre’s lush guitar tones channel that nostalgic 80s energy while keeping things fresh and forward-thinking. It’s the kind of track that balances upbeat rhythms with introspective lyrics, making it both a jam and a journey.
MatAre’s own experience living apart from loved ones is one of the main inspirations behind the song. “I live and work in a separate city and home from my loved ones. Because of this, I always feel detached from a normal family,” he explains. “I wanted to write a song about how I have normalised this life and in a way have made it an optimistic endeavor, hence the upbeat and seemingly happy tone of the song.”
The song turns that bittersweet reality into something beautifully resilient, with melodies that uplift even as they reflect on the distance. Its the honesty that makes “Under A Stone” feel so relatable.

The song’s organic creation process adds another layer of authenticity. “When I started the songwriting process, I literally didn't know what the song would be about,” says Rousseau. “As I streamed my consciousness a song appeared and it is an amazing process to me to watch how a song unfolds.” That raw evolution gives the track a personal, yet universal, vibe—inviting listeners to find their own meaning in its melodies.
“Under A Stone” isn’t just a song—it’s a musical journey through introspection, transformation, and hope. Whether it’s the catchy melodies, honest lyrics, or genre-bending production, this release proves MatAre is carving out a well-deserved space in the indie scene.
