‘Falling Under’ by Awaiting Abigail: Review

Awaiting Abigail’s latest single, “Falling Under,” is a post-grunge-metal powerhouse that explores the dark aftermath of a dysfunctional relationship. The track opens with a hauntingly ethereal and angelic intro, setting a poignant tone before unleashing a raw, emotional storm of heavy riffs and Abigail Hill’s mesmerizing vocals. It’s a song that pulls listeners into its turbulent depths, balancing vulnerability with unrelenting power.
Formed in 2024, Awaiting Abigail is a reunion of sorts for high school friends Heather Hammonds (drums), Laurie Barnett (bass), and James Smith (guitar), who once played together in the late 90s with the band Lost Reality. Each member brings decades of musical experience to the table: Heather’s precision honed through her work with Dallas bands like Faded Grace, Laurie’s punk-rock grit from years with Jenny Dick and other acts, and James’ classical and jazz expertise shaped by nearly two decades of teaching.
Rounding out the lineup is the father-daughter duo Mike and Kori Tolfa. Mike, a longtime friend of James and aviation enthusiast, joined the project alongside Kori, who was one of James’ band students and now handles the band’s synthesized soundscapes. The final piece of the puzzle came when James discovered Abigail Hill, a phenomenally gifted vocalist and actress. Her talent and energy transformed the project, with her name becoming the band’s moniker and her voice the defining element of their sound.
Awaiting Abigail’s style is a bold fusion of hard rock and metal, with influences like The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm, and In This Moment. Their music is characterized by two-guitar attacks, layered synth textures, and driving rhythmic grooves, all of which serve as the foundation for Abigail’s soaring, soulful vocals. Whether in harmony or cutting through with raw power, Abigail’s voice shifts effortlessly between angelic and gritty, providing a dynamic range that perfectly complements the band’s intense sound.

Awaiting Abigail’s first live show took place at Trees, Dallas on December 21, 2024, during the UnSilent Night: Women in Metal Showcase. The performance was an electric introduction to the band’s unique chemistry and stage presence. The band’s recent four-track EP has made waves, earning internet radio play in both national and international markets.
“Falling Under” perfectly encapsulates Awaiting Abigail’s ethos: heavy, melodic, and unapologetically emotional.
