Glasgow-based singer-songwriter Johnny Barr's latest single, "Break the Fall", released on March 28, 2025, is an emotional powerhouse, blending classic rock influences, progressive twists, and raw vulnerability.

Johnny’s been on stage for years, grinding away in pubs and venues, but somewhere along the line, he lost his fire for original music. It wasn’t until he trained to become a music therapist—a journey that required deep self-reflection—that he rediscovered his passion for songwriting.

The result is a collection of songs that tackle personal growth, self-doubt, and embracing change. “Break the Fall” isn’t just about music; it’s about transformation—the kind that hits you in the chest.

Drawing inspiration from an eclectic mix of legends like Fleetwood Mac (for those lush harmonies), Jethro Tull (for progressive structures), and even Slipknot and Foo Fighters (for raw intensity), Johnny has crafted a sound that doesn’t fit neatly into a box. It’s classic rock meets singer-songwriter depth, with a touch of blues and prog-rock intricacy.

And let’s talk about Calum Ingram. His bluesy cello work isn’t just a feature—it’s a soulful, spine-tingling force that elevates the song to another level.

Instead of jumping straight into a full-band session, Johnny built this song from the ground up—starting with acoustic guitar and vocals. This stripped-down approach allowed the song to grow organically. The end result is a record that feels alive—dynamic, textured, and deeply human.

Johnny isn’t just about the recording—his live shows are an experience. His EP launch at Slay in Glasgow was a huge success, pulling in a 500-strong crowd with a fully synchronized lighting display. Not only did he self-fund the entire show, but he made sure every musician and crew member was paid fairly—a rare move in today’s indie scene.

He’s now heading to Spain for a songwriting retreat with Kyle Falconer (The View) and Justin Hawkins (The Darkness). Big things are happening, and Johnny is just getting started.

“Break the Fall” isn’t just another indie rock release. It’s the sound of an artist reclaiming his voice, embracing his past, and pushing forward into something bigger.

Keep your ears open—because Johnny Barr isn’t just making music. He’s making waves.
